California Salsa I
HMA Salsa/Jazz Orchestra

Conducted by Bobby Rodriguez

What big band Latin sound do you know? When you think of big band Latin music who do you think of?

Now you have the HMA Salsa/Jazz Orchestra conducted by Bobby Rodriguez.

This classic recording was the first for the fledgling Hispanic Musicians Association in 1991. This recording documents a few very important things, one-that if you have a dream, you must go for if, and don't wait for anyone to make if happen for you, you have got to do it! Secondly, the unsung hero of West coast Latin music or as Bobby calls him, our Salsa guru, Paul Lopez.

The music is four adaptations and eight originals.

"Floreando" opens with a powerful salsa bass hook that never lets us go, solo's by David Torres, piano and Tony Lujan, trumpet. "Josefina" is a great crowd pleaser in a Cha-Cha rhythm. "Uno Mas" is another flag waver of the hot salsa kind. "A-Train Mambo" is a Latinized freight engine that makes your feet move and features Bobby on a beautiful muted solo. "Sola Naci" features Cuban singing star Candi Sosa on her own composition with another fabulous arrangement by Paul Lopez. Three originals by Billy Mitchell, "Serengeti" in 6/8, "It Could Only Be You" and "Love In The Redwoods" completes a trilogy of some American/Latin brew that's a swinging good time. Paul contributes his bolero, "Sylvia" that will take your breath away along with his arrangement of the wonderful Mexican bolero "Noche." Irving Berlin's "Blue Sky's" in salsa continues Paul's magic. And to round out this package Clare Fischer's "Pensativa" is called upon in a Bossa Nova rhythm and the magic continues.
